Public Notice: Civil Service Mileage Fee Update

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Civil Unit wishes to inform the public that the mileage fees assessed for the service of civil process will be updated effective .

All requests for service received on or after July 13, 2026 will be subject to the revised mileage fee schedule. Individuals, attorneys, businesses, and other agencies utilizing the services of the Civil Unit are encouraged to review the updated fee information prior to submitting requests for service.

Questions regarding the revised mileage fees or civil process procedures may be directed to the Civil Unit during normal business hours at (303) 271-6580.

About Civil Process

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Civil Unit is responsible for serving civil process documents and enforcing court orders. We serve documents throughout Jefferson County in accordance with Colorado law and the Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure.

Documents We Serve

A summons notifies the defendant that a lawsuit has been filed against them and that they must respond within a specified time frame.

Required Information:

  • Complete name and address of the person to be served
  • Physical description (if available)
  • Work address (if known)
  • Phone number (if available)

A subpoena is a court order requiring a person to appear at a specific time and place to testify or produce documents.

Types:

  • Subpoena ad testificandum: Requires testimony
  • Subpoena duces tecum: Requires production of documents

These orders protect individuals from harassment, domestic abuse, or other threatening behavior.

  • Temporary Protection Orders (TPO)
  • Permanent Protection Orders
  • Civil Protection Orders
  • Emergency Protection Orders

Note: Service of protection orders is prioritized for safety reasons.


After a court orders an eviction, the Sheriff's Office serves the writ of restitution and coordinates the physical removal if necessary. The eviction process has three steps that you, as the plaintiff (landlord/owner), are responsible for completing.

Mileage Fees — Effective

Mileage for the service of civil papers is charged by ZIP code, calculated as round-trip travel from the Civil Office to the center of each ZIP code at $0.725 per mile (26 U.S.C. 162; C.R.S. 30-11-107), rounded down to the nearest $0.25.
